Be careful what you wish for

Well the dog days of summer are here. Now matter where you are in the state of NC you are probably in some kind of drought. With a lack of rainfall here at the coast we are experiencing our highest salinity rates in a long time. That makes for one salty oyster, maybe for some folks too salty. With that being said, I have been “hoping” for a little rain here and there lately. We have had a couple strong rain events in July so far. Out of the ten days so far this month the waters in my area have been closed to harvest six days, only open for four days since July 1st. The state tests for good water quality after heavy rain events. If water quality is down the state notifies shellfish farmers of the closures via email with attached map of areas affected. Looks like we had another 3+ inches last night. Be careful what you wish for.
