Soggy start

Well we sure have a wet ending to January and a soggy start to Feburary. I am so thankful for the mostly warm temps all through this past fall and now during winter. As of tomorrow our harvesting at Roysters NC has been closed for two weeks! The recent rains have “dirtied” the local waters with run off after heavy rains and rather big rain accumulation events. The State of NC has a water quality division that checks the chemistry of the waters after the above mentioned rain events. If too many polutants are found in the water they send out proclamations via e-mail, noting which waters are affected by temporary closure status. These actions make sure that you the consumer, does not get sick by eating an oyster with high levels of bacteria in it. I can still go out to the farm and work while the harvesting is closed. I just cannot haevest/sell any oysters during that time. We hope that by mid week to be back open for harvesting. It gets pretty frustrating some times when the waters stay closed more that a week. Its just part of this business wether I like it or not. We are planning to resume limited deliveries to the Greenville area. They will probably be evey other week denpending the demand.
